1. How
can I make my small
room feel larger?
Take a good look at
your space. A small
room should be well
thought out. Furnish
it sparingly with
pieces that you
need. Cluttered
small spaces don't
work. Purge, put it
in storage, throw it
out! A space will
also appear larger
if you use fewer
colors. You might
try different shades
of a single color.
Another idea is to
install light
flooring. It
reflects and
multiplies light,
allowing the room to
feel more airy.

2. My
chandelier in my
dining room is
hanging 2 feet from
the ceiling. It
looks too high to
me. Is there a rule
for hanging
chandeliers?
A chandelier should
be appreciated while
seated as well as
from across the
room. As a starting
point, try making
the distance from
the tabletop to the
base of the
chandelier 30 to 36
inches. For a room
over 8 feet tall,
increase the
distance an
additional 3 inches
for every foot over
8 feet. Also keep in
mind when you hang
your chandelier
lower, it creates
more intimacy at
your table.
3. I
have a small
uneventful window in
my living room. What
sort of window
treatment would you
suggest, that
wouldn't draw too
much attention to
it, yet would make
the window appear
more finished.
You could try a very
simple curtain rod
with classic linen
panels or a crisp
cotton duck tab top
curtain, hung just
below the ceiling.
This would give you
the illusion of a
longer window
without overpowering
it with heavy
fabrics.

4. What
can I do to 'summerize'
or 'winterize' my
living space?
If you use area
rugs, store them in
the spring and
summer. Let your
floors meet your
bare feet. Fresh
seasonal flowers
bring your rooms
alive. A straw hat
on a hook or a bowl
filled with
seashells can give
your space a
summerhouse feeling.
Rearrange your
furnishings to take
advantage of a
garden view, and
open the windows to
allow fresh air to
revitalize your
home. Cotton or
linen slipcovers are
a refreshing change
for the warm months
as well. In the fall
and winter, bring in
a few extra throw
pillows and a couple
of blankets to wrap
in. Add a basket
full of books to
curl up and read on
chilly nights. Move
your furnishings
around to a cozier
closer arrangement.
Your favorite chair
in front of the
fireplace with a
small table close by
for a warm drink or
perhaps even dinner.
Have a stack of
firewood close by or
if you don't have a
fireplace, large
pillar candles can
give a warm glow to
a winter room.

5. I've
been thinking about
repainting my living
room. The room has
vaulted ceilings and
often feels too
large. What color
would help the room
feel cozier?
Try looking at a
warm, dark color in
a flat finish. The
warmth of a color
will promote just
that - a warmer
feel. A darker color
will absorb light
and make your walls
feel more enclosed.
You might consider
painting your
ceiling a darker
color as well. This
would make it appear
closer to you.
